I don’t want to hear American music being played when Canadians are lifting the Voyageurs Cup in the air.
Did you hack my Google Music account? Or break in and rifle through my CDs? 😉 (and no, there’s no Nickleback in my collection).
It was at least (which by no means excuses it), a Canadian – actually a Torontonian – artist who’s song was played for the goal music.
Thank God you don’t have Nickleback in your collection! One of the most hated Canadian bands of all time. Even Justin Beiber isn’t loathed like Nickleback is, or as some haters say Nicklecrap. For me they are so generic and commercial.
Avril Laving is forever tainted since she was married to the lead singer for a short time. What’s his name? Kreuger? Freddy kreuger must be his name since he gives me nightmares.
But anyway the Can-con rules did a great job of helping Canadian musicians get noticed and establish careers in the music industry. From the late 70’s we got bands like Payolas, Rough Trade, the band named Toronto. The 80’s had alot of bands, Chalk Circle, Luba, Frozen Ghost, Jane Siberry.
Some very origanal music was created by more creative bands like Skinny Puppy and Peaches. I was listening to her song “fuck the pain away” and “mud” the other day and was impressed by her music. The lead singer of Peaches was originally a teacher. Seems very odd considering her type of music but she was able to make a go as a professional singer. Then you have a band like the Shuffle demons, remember them? Can you imagine a song like “Spadina Bus” getting airtime without Can-con rules? Their singing about public transit in Toronto of all things!
Though the internet can’t be regulated so Can-con rules don’t have the impact they use to have. Still YouTube makes it easy to find obscure old Canadian bands.
