The South Stand Report : Toronto v Chicago (season finale)

Chicago Fire as the Sting

Chicago Fire as the Sting

It’s the season finale! Can Altidore and Ricketts find time for one another and make the magic happen? Is Vanney only wearing pink, salmon, and all shades in between? Will Will willingly get a will (in case he get’s off’d)? And which character are they going to kill off? Hope there isn’t a cliffhanger and, more importantly, hope it doesn’t end poorly like last season. Almost didn’t care if the show was renewed after that debacle…

Bold Predictions

  1. Seba goal
  2. Cheyrou assist (even though he’s on the bench)
  3. Columbus delivers a win

On to the Match :

10’ – Cooper lays off a sweet ball to Seba and he fires it just wide.

18’ – GOAL – De Leeuw breaks through on the far right side and nutmegs Irwin. Not what we needed to see.
ROBINS 0, TIRE FIRE 1

45’ – PENALTY – Giovinco gets tripped and the ref points to the spot.

45’ – GOAL – Seba in the far left corner out of the keepers reach
ROBINS 1, TIRE FIRE 1

45+1’ – YELLOW – Zavaleta for something

Half Time mood : uninspiring but at least it’s tied. Controlled much of the half but not much was happening.

52’ – Altidore gets into the box and pulls a pass across the face of goal, but Seba couldn’t get to it

54’ – GOAL – ball loops away from goal and Seba settles it, turns his marker around to get free to fire it back into the middle and finds Morrow’s head. Brilliant efforts.
ROBINS 2, TIRE FIRE 1

61’ – SUB – Altidore in for Ricketts. But… but… what about #ALTITTS *hey*. Greg, #ALTITTS matters (Consider removing this terrible, terrible gag ~ Ed.)

62’ – GOAL – Osorio takes a ball just on the edge of the box, loses it a little but maintains control, dances around the keeper and fires it into the far corner. Well done.
ROBINS 3, TIRE FIRE 1

68’ – SUB – Will Johnson for Cooper. There’s a weird comfort knowing Will is on the pitch.

68’ – SUB – Oso comes off for Cheyrou.

83’ – GOAL – Vincent is wide on the wing, floats one in and it lands to the foot of Goosens after an odd deflection, takes a half-volley and buries it. And I was joking about it with @B_Like_Fonz
that something like this could happen. I do not want to be right… not like this…
ROBINS 3, TIRE FIRE 2

2 mins of extra time

Full Time : Toronto 3, Chicago 2

Man of the Match : Seba. Why not. Not for the goal, but for drawing the penalty and that assist.

Goat of the Game : I don’t know… I got nothing.

Ref Rating : 3 out of 5. Some odd calls, but nothing that affected the outcome.

I Am Not The Gaffer, But… : Altidore for Ricketts? Really? REALLY?!?!? DID YOU EVEN WATCH LAST GAME?!?!!?

In Case You PVR’d It : It’s not a terrible game, but watch up to the first goal (11 minutes?), skip to about 40th, and watch the second half.

Kit Spotting : Saw TWO people wearing the current Saprissa kit (you might remember them from Champions League) from Costa Rica. Nice shirt.

Bold Predictions Results :

  1. Nailed it. Seba penalty. Seba goal.
  2. Failed it. Given that he came on, I’m going to say I was close as Cheyrou probably would’ve assisted.
  3. Failed it. Columbus did tie it at one point, but were thumped 4-1 by real New York.

For those that don’t know,
Toronto FC finish 3rd and will face

Philadelphia on Wednesday at 7:30.

I’ll be honest with you people.  I had a hard time watching the game gabbing with a kid and spent an absurd amount of time waiting in line to buy a scarf.  What I did see was much of the same unconvincing play that got Toronto from first to third.  I don’t know if that’s what you saw too.  I also managed to miss the second and third goal because of said line.  Props to the guy who gave me the season’s ticket discount on the scarf even though I was without the card.  Good thing on the podcast, I’m the funny one. (Are you? ~Ed.)

Player Ratings : Irwin 6, Zavaleta 6, Moor 6.5, Hagglund 6.5, Beitashour 6, Cooper 6 [Johnson N/A], Bradley 6, Osorio 7 [Cheyrou N/A], Morrow 7, Altidore 6.5, Giovinco 8

Unused Substitutions : Bono, Bloom, Delgado, Williams

  1. We have seen a full month of almost gutless play from Reds, after a 9 game stretch that was marked by perhaps the best period of play in the club’s history. From the 3rd week of July till mid-September the team won 7 out of 9 games. They will need that magical form to take them through to the MLS Cup
