The South Stand Report : Toronto v Montreal (0-1 agg.)

Montreal Impact as the Manic

Montreal Impact as the Manic

It’s that time of year kids.  The one where the mighty Robins go for the only meaningful piece of hardware they’re likely to win any season, and it’s one we at the Vocal Minority cherish – The Voyageurs Cup.  As the format repeatedly gets retooled for various logical and simple reasons, this trophy that we’re competing for qualifies us for the next CONCACAF Champions League because Vancouver has been acclaimed for this year’s.  I don’t care, let’s win a trophy, shall we?

On to the match :

22′ –  GOAL – Giovinco holds at the edge of the box, sends Altidore through and his first touch pops over the sliding keeper.  Damn you Jozy that was class…
ROBINS 1, FROMAGE 0

24′ – GOAL – corner from Montreal, hits a head  in the box, finds 26 who takes it off his chest, volleys it towards goal and Kenny Cooper redirects it past Konopka
ROBINS 1, FROMAGE 1

56′ – GOAL – Bradley free kick finds Altidore on the far post who lays it into the path of Cheyrou who buries it from 6 yds out.
ROBINS 2, FROMAGE 1

58′ –  GOAL – Bradley through to Altidore who touches it onto Giovinco, who beats a sliding tackle and puts it past Kronberg.
ROBINS 3, FROMAGE 1

81′ – SUB – Altidore for Moore

81′ – SUB – Creavalle for Osorio

84′ – GOAL – big cross from Miller finds Oduro on the far post losing his marker and heads it past Konopka.  You speedy endearing bastard…
ROBINS 3, FROMAGE 2

87′ – SUB – Hagglund on for Morrow

5 min of extra time

Full Time : Toronto 3, Montreal 2, Montreal eliminate Toronto 3-3 aggregate due to away goals.

Man of the Match : Altidore with a goal and two assists. I couldn’t deny him if I wanted to.

Goat of the Game : whoever fired off the fireworks at full-time. I don’t care if Toronto ‘won’, they were eliminated from a competition by conceding two goals to Montreal’s B team at home. Nothing to celebrate here.

Ref Rating : 2 out of 5. Morgan studs up tackled someone and got no call, and Giovinco ran behind someone and tapped their ankle and got a caution.  Idiot.

I Know I’m Not The Gaffer But… : I would’ve went for it in the first leg too.

In Case You PVR’d It : watch the two goals in the first half, then let second half go.  Lots of fun stuff there.

Kit Spotting : Though I saw far more Juve kits tonight (still nowhere near 50), the award goes to the woman with the Western New York Flash scarf.

Eriq Zavaleta made one helluva tackle when the score was 3-1. You’ve earned one game free of obvious nepotism-based harassment.  Quality stuff… Hey announcer-guy, it’s pronounced Mack-and-Ernie, not whatever butchering you made of it. It’s important to get it right as that’s a critical gag around these parts… The wikipedia page for the TFC roster should list Bradley’s position as “All”. He was everywhere… You’ve probably heard the phrase “he’s going for glory” where someone unexpected goes for a big finish?  Watch Hagglund’s attempt in injury time.  That is exactly what those play-by-play announcers were talking about… OMG why am I still up… more notes go here, naw screw it, I’m going to bed.

Player Ratings : Konopka 6, Morgan 7, Perquis 6, Zavaleta 6.5, Morrow 7 [Hagglund N/A], Cheyrou 6.5, Warner 7, Bradley 6, Osorio 6.5 [Creavalle N/A], Giovinco 7, Altidore 8 [Moore N/A]

  1. ref was definitely on the poor side, seemed determined not to give giovinco anything, and yeah, that morgan tackle was nasty, there was a noticeable ‘ooooo’ from the toronto fans, that can’t be a good sign.

nasty bump on the head allowed tfc to score the 2nd, and maybe the 3rd as well against ten men. convenient really.
Perquis continues to unimpress. did a half arsed job of closing down mallace n the first goal, and then beat by Oduro (not a particularly tall man) for the 2nd.

oduro scoring late was world’s least surprising thing. TFC could use a proper winger/goalscoring threat like him. but nope, we need cap space and allocation money for the likes of perquis, or robbie findley, who’s on roughly the same wage. he’ll do well playing wide, right? No,? How about Collen Warner? (actually he wasn’t terrible).

Bradley very involved, giovinco very skilled, altidore all over the game, good games by the dp’s, the chequebook worked, even if the tactics didn’t work. again though, it was the defenders fault. maybe if it’s always the defenders fault, it’s actually not their fault but something else. My faith in Vanney dwindles more and more.

    • Thank-you Duncan you hit on all the points. Yes, on a replay you can see Altidore’s tibia flex on the Bernier stomp. Perquis is floating out there and really should be on the bench. We saw the Kristian Jack 4-3-3 and it worked pretty well. The “Big Four” put up one of the pretty goals on the third strike. Vanney continues to show that he is easily out coached game, in and out.

      • seems like more of a 4-1-3-2 to me, with cheyrou as the 1 and warner bradley and osorio ahead. or maybe a diamond with bradley at the top of it, but then he did his usual thing of going back to get the ball a lot so difficult to really tell what the formation was supposed to be , was him getting really forward the freelancing, or going back the freelancing. not sure.

we’ve clearly got some very good players in the team up top, and they’re playing well, putting up some impressive stats, and that’s almost dragging us to nearly being an average team, which is quite the indictment of how the team as a whole is being organised.
