The South Couch Report : New York v Toronto

New York Red Bulls as the Cosmos

The Part I Write Before The Match :

Well, I’m running behind, full on fish and chips and I’ve got enough time to just to predictions.  Sorry.  Not really.

Bold Predictions :

  1. #altitts will get two goals
  2. BWP will be held off the scoresheet
  3. Bradley will get a booking

On to the Match :

Quote of the Match :

Is Cooper playing? [No.] Good.

~ my wife

16’ – BWP puts it into the box and Gulbrandson gets a solid shot off, but Bono gobbles it up.

Fun Fact : a Google search for “nyrb” gives you the New York Review of Books.  How has no one ever noticed this?!? Kristin will be pleased.

29’ – Big ball over the top from Vazquez finds Ricketts and gets into the penalty area, but his shot is poorly taken and blocked by the defenders.

37’ – YELLOW – Bradley gets booked for a clumsy tackle from behind.

38’ – GOAL – Ensuing free kick popped into the box, headed back across goal and Wright-Phillips turns his back to goal and kicks the ball behind him to beat Bono

Half-Time Mood : meh. Not poor like Columbus, but not convinced they’re doing enough.

47’ – Toronto pressing and some clever control of the ball finds Vazquez leaving a free ball for Morrow who gathers it, takes a touch and fires through the defenders, forcing Robles to make a save.

58’ – Wow, low cross into the box, Mavinga takes a swipe and misses, but Zavaleta clears it before it could get to BWP.

60’ – SUB – Moor off for Cheyrou

67’ – SUB – Delgado off for Edwards

68’ – Maurillo takes a swipe at Edwards legs… no booking.  Sure.  OK, now it’s a booking.  Good call ref.

70’ – GOAL – Wow… just wow.  Vazquez fights off 3 defenders, gets it out to Beitashour, hooks it in, Mavinga heads it, Cheyrou redirects it past Robles. #legend
REVIEWERS OF BOOKS 1, ROBINS 1

77’ – Mavinga, step on up.  New York with a long ball counter, and Mavinga clears it away with confidence in the midfield.  Outstanding.

80’ – PENALTY – HOLY SHIT! Jozy chips Robles, Ricketts chases it down and Perrinelle hacks down Ricketts.  Moron.

81’ – SAVED – Robles guesses correctly on Altidore’s attempt.  Ugh.

82’ – YELLOW – Altidore booked for a late tackle from behind.  He’ll be suspended for the Columbus match.

84’ – Rickett with two defenders on him lets forth a shot and beats Robles, but hits the crossbar.

85’ – Bono makes a key stop from a Royer header.

86’ – Zavaleta does a great job shutting down BWP one-on-one in the penalty area to deflect a shot out for a throw.

87’ – Ahhhhhhhhh…. low cross just out of reach of BWP and Bono gets a piece of it.

Why is this game getting way too exciting now?!

88 ‘ –  This is crazy… and it’s no goal. Edwards was off-side even though he didn’t contribute to the goal… OMG so nanners.  So nanners.  Ricketts denied by the officials.  Tragedy.

90’ – SUB – Hamilton in for Ricketts

3 mins of extra time

Full Time : New York 1, Toronto 1

Man of the Match : I really enjoyed Mavinga’s game so he gets it.  Vazquez honourable mention.

Goat of the Game : Can I give goat to the first 45 minutes of a game?!  Cuz that’s my goat.

Ref Rating : 4 out of 5. I’m willing to give a pass on the disallowed goal as the rule clearly states why it was disallowed.

I Am Not The Gaffer, But… : Got the substitutions correct, but the Starting XI misfires again.  Still, nearly stole another game.

In Case You PVR’d It : Check out the first goal in the first half and skip the rest.  Watch the whole second half.

Bold Predictions Results

  1. Failed it.  Even the disallowed goal wouldn’t have counted.
  2. Failed it.  Nice goal.  Boo.
  3. Nailed it. To be fair, I felt he was due for a booking.

As much as I want Ricketts to have a killer instinct, I don’t think he has it. He scores goals, few of them pretty, but rarely works of art. He’s very useful and has a useful tool set, however, I’ll be shocked if he ever has a belter from 20 yards out that screams into the top corner… I’m going to get a complex, if I don’t already have one as I now expect every substitute to come on and be a part of the pending bail-out… Did anyone else say aloud “who’s this douche bag” before the announcers mentioned it was Aurelien Collin watching with an injury?  Couldn’t have been just me… Delgado didn’t have the best performance given that he’s been outstanding.  Still his mediocre game was better than anything I’ve seen from Cooper so far #burn

Player Ratings : Bono 6.5, Zavaleta 6.5, Moor 6 (Cheyrou 8), Mavinga 7.5, Beitashour 6.5, Morrow 6.5, Bradley 6, Delgado 6 (Edwards 6.5), Vazquez 6.5, Ricketts 6.5 (Hamilton N/A), Altidore 6.5

Unused Substitutions : Irwin, Chapman, Hernandez, Cooper

  1. Not at all upset about the disallowed goal, Edwards stupidly stayed offside and was involved in play right in ftont of the net. Mind you, Gulbrandsen was clearly offside on the RB goal. That was how he was able to head the ball over.

Thought thre Reds dominated the game and had too many chances to win this game by 2 or 3 goals. The team was guilty of over playing the ball in the first half.

I am getting greedy as this result would have been wonderful in previous years

    • Oh yeah, the Reds run in the first half was not only over played, it was pedantic.
