  1. Woah, woah, woah! Stop a second. Stop right now! This question you ask…

    Who is Cynthia Rothrock?!

All this time I thought the British were men of culture.

I will give Duncan the benefit of doubt. Maybe he was imprisoned up in the Tower of London for his insolent words against the Queen. Probably forced to watch endless reruns of Dr Who, fifth division English soccer and the goings on of the Coronation Street.

So his view of the world is severely compromised.

Now let me tell you something about the Queen of kicks. The stunt woman, martial arts master, and cult movie star.

During the glory years of VHS tapes. The time of bootlegs and video stores. I personally remember seeing three movies with her featured on the cover on the shelf at the same time.

Now you have to understand during the late 80’s and early 90’s young athletic girls watched these movies. Probably the first time many saw a woman in a non traditional role. Outside of tennis and figure skating very little coverage of woman’s sports in the media at the time. Or for soccer for that natter. Rothrock may have helped broaden the scope of what is possible for women in the future.

And I would like to point out that the action scenes she was best used in was her early Hong Kong movies. These movies have a cult following in Europe to this day. Her fight with Sammo Hung in Millionaires express, or co-starring with Michelle Yeoh in Yes Madam. And who can forget her outstanding performance in the bizarrely entertaining movie, The Magic Crystal https://youtu.be/fAkHNyd097g trailer.

Furthermore I would like to point out that she was featured in Canadian produced movies that were filmed in Canada. Such as the movie Tiger Claws. So Cynthia Rothrock is also part of our shared Canadian heritage.

Maybe you have walked in her very footsteps as she was filmed clearing the Toronto streets of criminal scum…
