Episode 432 – 22/11/29 #GreenwichFriendlyTime

The gang is all here to talk about the #CanMNT at the World Cup in Qatar, which is a shock to everyone. We cover both matches vs Belgium and Croatia, discuss performance, expectations, the Tajon-to-Phonzie goal, the overreaction of the media, other tournament surprises and disappointments, also some TFC, some CanPL, and malarkey. In this episode, Duncan has a brilliant idea regarding the true meaning, Mark conducts a eulogy for some bunnies, Tony wanted vienna wieners as a sponsor and Kristin thought Atiba should’ve come off earlier (and she LOVES Atiba)

  1. Really sad to see Edmonton lose a team. It’s not just about the loss of a place for pros to play… It feels like a bit of history has vanished.

Canada doesn’t have alot of soccer history and FC Edmonton was building something. From the remnants of NASL they revived and a link of soccer history and tradition in the area. Any kids in the area had something locally to strive for. It never was perfect, many people noticed issues. But whether it was mediocre or a mess it was their mess. Now many fans will likely drift off to watching a generic big EPL team that they have no real connection too.

Like to point out that the Loyal River Company Podcast was following the team for many years. Unlike many CPL team specific podcasts that quickly disappeared when they realized their was a small fanbase for Canadian Soccer below the MLS level. I listened to a few episodes years back, even though I’m not from the province. It was cool to listen to people passionate about a small little club.

Hopefully CPL can slowly build history with their other teams. With time a connection with the team and the local community will grow. Canadian soccer heritage will form and hold. Local heroes and moments of sport history that people can remind each other about rather then mumbling something about some faceless corporate team in England.
