Episode 440 – 23/02/16 #banuts

The gang is half here to discuss and rage at the #CanWNT funding inequalities and the potential fallout, discuss and wrap up #TFClive preseason, talk some #CanPL stadiums, a touch of jersey talk and reduced, but present, malarkey. 1. This is a much bigger issue then Canada Soccer. Bigger than sports, not just in Canada. Issues with governance, transparency, and how society thinks athletes should be treated, issues with how coaches behave, issues with how sport federations deal with problems. Issues with provincial and state laws. Issues with International federations. Issues with how women and men are treated differently.

The one thing I can say is today it seems athletes are starting to be open about the frustration. It’s clear to me that problems existed for many years but people just bite their tongues.

No easy answers, no simple solutions. But don’t push down the frustration inside and say,”serenity now!” That doesn’t work!!!!

I remember hearing how athletes were treated in Judo decades ago. Heard virtually the same thing in amateur boxing. At the time I just assumed it was an isolated incident.

Recently heard very similar comments about different people again in those same sports. And reports are starting to flood in these days about many issues in high level amateur and professional sports in North America. Just because you didn’t hear anything before doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.

Let’s be clear their are good people working their best with limited resources in Canada. People you would be happy to bond with.

It’s so easy to paint Canada Soccer as an evil entity. Many people are working diligently in frustration and I don’t want them all to get the evil eye.

It angers me that some would be so dismissive of Canadian Premier League. If it doesn’t survive and grow than Soccer in Canada will shrivel back again. Those teams and small stadiums are needed for a Women’s league in Canada to be built on.

Their is no garentee that a professional Women’s league will succeed. Just ask the Women’s pro hockey league about that…

For those that think Europe is the answer I laugh at that. Their are many so called “Soccer” fans that hold their noses up at Canadian MLS teams let alone CPL. An elitist attitude that does nothing to help the sport grow in Canada. The ones who always seem to have plenty of money for foreign gear but wouldn’t pay a penny for anything Canadian.

If a young athletic person decides to pursue their passion for sports. I wish them the best. It isn’t an easy path they travel…
