The South Couch Report : Montreal v Toronto

Montreal Impact as the Manic

Montreal Impact as the Manic

Naps are the best, aren’t they?  They’re a great mid-day recharge, and they help when you’re looking forward to yet another away match and not entirely optimistic.

Montreal has a good home record, but this is the first one outside at home.  Totally not a dome scenario.

Toronto stole the last game, can they thieve a second one in a row?

On to the Match :

1’ – Sorry napping.  No really.

6’ – dreamt that I was the only person who objected to the Columbus away kit and was fired for it.

11’ – dreamt I was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for my courage

12’ – wakes up and looks at the time. Realzies that it’s not a 5pm kick off

15’ – turns on TV and realizes prolly misses nothing.

23’ – free kick from Donadel finds a Drogba at the back post leaping over Altidore to head it just wide of the net.

27’ – YELLOW – Morrow gets booked for a rough tackle on Oduro

28’ – Osorio takes a flick on from Altidore, feints to lose his marker and fires it forcing a save from Bush

39’ – PENALTY – Altidore gets hauled down and Unkle Ted points to the spot

39’ – GOAL Giovinco slots it low and left

Half-Time Mood : well… That’s impressive.

63’ – Piatti pops a cross and finds Drogba with 3 defenders on him, ensuing header is stopped by Irwin

66’ – Montreal is really looking for the penalty call. Or at least the revenge penalty call.

78’ – it seems like there’s been a lot of silly fouls. Nothing violent or dangerous, just unnecessary, in the last few mins.

80’ – GOAL – Johnson pokes a ball through just missing being tackled, Giovinco gets through, one touch, slots it past Bush, does the motorcycle celebration for our next podcast recording
CHEESEMAKERS 0, ROBINS 2

87’ – Giovinco gets down the wing, lays it off for Altidore from 13 yards out and fires it wide with only Bush to beat.

88’ – Oyongo takes a big diagonal cross, beats Irwin but rolls it across the face of goal

89’ – SUB – Babouli comes on for Giovinco

3 minutes of extra time

90+2’ – Babouli fires a nice cross sending Altidore through and in third gear, can’t beat Bush to the ball

90+2’ – SUB – Williams comes in for Delgado

Full Time : Montreal 0, Toronto 2

Man of the Match : Giovinco or Irwin. I’m picking Irwin. Not saving the penalty changes the complexion of the game.

Goat of the Game : Altidore, not many glaring errors all game, but missing a sitter for someone who should have those as
free goals is confusing at best.  If he’s going to be paid like an elite player in MLS, you have to hit the sitters.

Ref Rating : Unkle Ted gets a 3 out of 5.  He blew a few calls.

I Am Not The Gaffer But : he nailed it.

In Case You PVR’d It : see the penalties and the last 15 minutes. Not a bad game but the highlights are what you want

It wasn’t pretty but beggars can’t be choosers.  Three points is three points… Does Perquis have a sunburn? Also, how? Really?… Osorio has had multiple forward ball motions. Had a great first half. That’s more like it… Donadel looks like the crazy mouthpiece of a group of bad guy wrestlers… Montreal had Georges St. Pierre to ring the bell.  I think the bell tapped out before he could get his hands on it #mma… Hope everyone behaved in and outside the stadium.  I hate seeing the suits have ammunition against supporters, of which they have plenty.

Player Ratings : Irwin 8, Perquis 6.5, Moor 6, Beitashour 6.5, Morrow 6, Osorio 7, Bradley 6.5, Johnson 7, Altidore 6, Delgado 6 [Williams N/A], Giovinco 8 [Babouli N/A]

    • Well, that didn’t work, I thought I had the code right, but I guess not.

What I enjoyed in this game was Drogba’s flops in the box, but Unkel – the man of strength, was having none of it. The other point was Drogba time wasting complaints. He stood in front of Irwin on the GK’s kick out and complained to Unkel about the time. Irwin and Unkel patiently waited for Didier to finish his rant and move out of the way.

Does Seba have to practice slipping the ball into the far corner or is it natural stroke from any position and angle on the pitch, by now? The second goal was so smooth and seamless, Bush didn’t have a chance. BTW – what was the intimidation act Bush was trying early in the game about? Altidore is our policeman.

  1. very impressive game really. aside from about 10 minutes around the 60th minute mark montreal just got nothing going at all. and the few times they did get to dangerous positions, it seemed there was always one or two tfc defenders there to get in their way or make a block. good well organised defending. excellent defending, and then by the the grace of giovinco, also managed to get a few chances and goals at the other end as well. lovely stuff.
