The South Stand Report : Toronto v Columbus

Columbus Crew as the Cleveland Stokers

Columbus Crew as the Cleveland Stokers

Are they sputtering? Stalling? Misfiring? It’s so difficult to wrap my head around it. Toronto and not look bad but they haven’t exactly looked great, and we’re expecting them to be great. We all know they have the potential to be great.

I don’t know about the players, but three games in eight days is exhausting. That’s a lot of 50/50 tickets.

Bold Predictions :

  1. Some asshats going on about “rivals”
  2. More goals from not Giovinco than Giovinco
  3. A tazing. #tradition

On to the Match :

32’ – Nothing is really happening, team needs a goal so I’m going to get a drink. #thirstySacrifice #whatIDoForThisTeam #whatIDoForYou

36’ – Giovinco takes a ball from a deep Babouli and has a go forcing Clark to make a big leaping save. Of course that happened

43’ – Irwin makes a great leaping save as the ball is tried to put underneath him, but palms it away. Naturally.

Half-Time Mood : Well, nothing significant happened while I was there…

45′ – SUB – Osorio comes on for Chapman

51’ – Columbus on the break and Meram chips Irwin but hits the post, rebound is collected by That Selfish Bastard Higuain and beats Irwin and what a stop by Williams, kick save!

56’ – YELLOW – Morrow for something.

56’ – SUB – Williams comes off for Endoh

78′ – SUB – Lovitz on for Morrow

83’ – YELLOW – Beitashour earns a booking for putting his head out for the ball and colliding with Justin Meram, who goes down with a leg injury and needs to be subbed off. Beitashour was nailed and the leg never touched.

88’ – Babouli threaded a beautiful ball through to Giovinco who beat the keeper, but not the post. So close.

Full Time : Toronto 0, Columbus 0

Man of the Match : ummm Irwin?  Sure, why not.

Goat of the Game : ummm hell I dunno… it was a fairly listless match

Ref Rating : 1 out of 5. Poor. Giovinco was abused all match, got few calls. Not wanting protection, just something more even. The Beitashour booking was very poor. Even the replay on the screen was having moral issues with showing so many bad calls.

I Am Not The Gaffer, But… : either play a 3-5-2 and make Babouli play beside Giovinco or do something that makes more sense

In Case You PVR’d It : you can give yourself the time off from this one, it’s frustration

Kit Spotting : Zimbabwe home. No one was close.

Bold Predictions Results :

  1. Probably someone was talking about that, so I’ll declare that I nailed it
  2. Failed the goal thing
  3. A tazing is to be determined. I assume it happened though.

Congratulations to Jonathan Osorio for getting his 100th appearance for Toronto. After ten years, that stat is very impressive… Still disappointed that Kei Kamara wasn’t here. Either playing for Columbus or a trade at the deadline for us #evilgrin… Babouli passing was very impressive.  Babouli dribbling gets shaky after the 4th touch.  Babouli should have a go from time to time when he gets into position… Am I the only one who thought the game was frustrating?… Quote of the match : The blue team is ruining the game ~ @MrTuktoyaktuk on the officiating, and he was right.  Thanks for hanging with us today sir… Toronto FC supporters after a dull match at the GO Station tunnel start chanting “Let’s Go Raptors” #thatsSoToronto…

Player Ratings : Irwin 7, Zavaleta 6, Williams 6 [Endoh 6], Moor 6.5, Beitashour 6.5, Johnson 6, Bradley 6.5, Chapman 6 [Osorio 100], Morrow 6 [Lovitz N/A], Babouli 6.5, Giovinco 7

  1. Ok this is getting frustrating, the team has come back to Fortress Mediocrity.

The FB’s are having a lot of problems dealing with the dual role of defending and providing an overlap option deep on the wing.

So we got out-shot, out-possessed, out-passed and out-tackled. This season is going in the wrong direction. The team looks most vulnerable in trying to pass the ball through their defensive midfield. So that 3-5-2 is not working, too many people in the midfield with nowhere to go.
